After his previous Sopra le nuvole, Amam and Lunaria, with more than thirty co-productions and other projects, Icaro solo is the new solo album by the Italian trumpeter Luca Aquino. The album was recorded in one day in a small church named Sant’Agostino in Benevento; it’s the live performance of an artist who is able to reach audacious sounds like the echoes of mythological tales. Time is that of a whole day. The location is an old religious place now converted into an auditorium at the University of Sannio. All alone in an empty space, accompanied only by his instruments (trumpet, loop station, his voice and percussions), Luca attentively examines the surrounding space, in order to grasp the different sounds. He moves and plays amongst paintings, furniture and frescoes, he jumps and stops from one note to another, throwing himself from the altar to the end of the nave. The microphones are set-up in various points of the church, so that Luca can make the most of the reverberation of the space, in seeking different sounds which are determined by the position within the architectural perimeter. In that way he finds that sounds within the presbytery are deep and dark while towards the entrance they become airy and large. The recording includes not only live looped sounds like the movements of the artist, but also some unexpected circumstances due to work outside: the drill becomes an instrument that one can play. In three musical tracks Luca records and duets with the sound created by the workers outside the church. A fusion of jazz and noise. Icaro solo is the result of a moment of inspiration where Luca’s music comes together due to different points within the church that encounter the sounds of the location transforming itself into improvisation. Showing a brilliant work by Mimmo Paladino on the cover of the CD, Icaro Solo is regarded as a coragious piece of work where music is the evidence of liberal and musical freedom. |
