The Armenian State Jazz Band led by Armen Martirosyan, direct successor of the first jazz orchestra in the whole Transcaucasus, founded by talented composer Artemi Ayvazyan by the order of the Government of the Republic of Armenia in 1938. The outstanding composer succeeded in creating a wonderful band, which would later be admired on the whole territory of the USSR. The basis of the band’s repertoire was the national folk music, which singled out the band among others. |

He has performed with Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster,
Art Farmer, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins,
Phil Woods, Chet Baker and many others. In 1965 he joined the Sonny Rollins Quartet and played
for about two years during one of Sonny’s more creative
periods but unfortunately an unrecorded one due to
a dispute with a recording company.
He became pianist/composer/arranger with the
Phil Woods Quintet at its inception in 1963 and toured
the world successfully many times.
The Quintet, and later the Quartet, released nine recordings
two of which, Live from the Showboat and The Phil Woods
Quartet vol.2, won Grammy Awards. |
